EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's Lauren Abruzzo and Ellen Anderson won races Saturday for the Wildcats as NU defeated Rutgers 198.5-101.5.
The Wildcats fell to No. 25 Notre Dame 160-140 and to No. 24 Michigan 172-128.
Freshman Lauren Abruzzo earned the `Cats points by winning the 1,000 yard free, with a time of 9:55.66. NU's Ellen Anderson took third in the race (10:00.25).
Anderson went on to take first place in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:53.27.
The Wolverines began the meet winning the 200 medley relay, swimming a 1:41.26. The `Cats squad of Lacey Locke, Julianne Kurke, Valerie Nubbe and Annika Winsnes took third with a time of 1:44.49.
The first three finishers in the 200 yard freestyle were separated by just 0:00.66. NU's Lacey Smith took second (1:50.76), behind the Wolverines Courtney Beidler (1:50.31). Smith close the gap throughout the race and edged out Notre Dame's Kelly Ryan, who took third (1:50.97).
In the 200 free, Ellen Stello earned points for NU with a second place finish (2:02.71). Bridget Casey won the race for the Irish (2:01.85).
The top three finishers in the 50 yard freestyle were also just separated by 0.30 seconds. The Wolverines Julia Salem edged out NU's Vaerie Nubbe by the slimmest of margins, 23.98 to 23.99.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights posted an impressive time in the 200 yard backstroke. Joanna Wu swam an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:58.89, taking first place ahead of Northwestern's Lacey Locke (1:59.41).
