Northwestern Names Donnie Torres Head Diving Coach
Sonya Porter Named Assistant Women's Swimming Coach
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Head Women's Swimming coach Jimmy Tierney announced
today the hiring of Donnie Torres as head men's and women's diving coach
and Sonya Porter as assistant women's swimming coach.
Torres, a 1993 graduate of Florida Atlantic University, comes to
Northwestern from Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, Fla.,
where he served as the head diving coach and fitness room facilitator,
athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coach since 1994. He was an
assistant diving coach at the the Coral Springs Aquatic Center from 1992-93
and served as a student coach for the men's and women's diving teams at
Indian River from 1987-88.
During his tenure at Indian River, Torres tutored 23 junior college
All-Americans, 10 junior college national champions and was named the 1997
Junior College National Coach of the Year.
Porter, a 1996 graduate of the University of Alabama and a 1993
graduate of the University of Canberra, Australia, worked as a volunteer
assistant swimming coach at Colorado State University since 1996. As a
student at Alabama, she served as a student assistant coach from 1993-96.
Porter earned a bachelor of science in exercise physiology from
Canberra and a bachelor of science in biology and human performance from
Alabama. She graduated Cum Laude and was a four-semester member of the
President's list at Alabama. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in
exercise physiology and cardiac rehabilitation.
