EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) has been named a Capital One Academic All-America second-team selection for the second-consecutive year, announced today (May 22) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Bast joins Chinazo Opia (1989-90) and Garland Cooper (2006-07) as the only multiple-time winners of the prestigious award in program history. In total, six Wildcats have combined to earn nine all-time Academic All-America accolades for Northwestern.

Bast will graduate in June with a degree in learning and organizational change and already has a job secured with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which she earned after performing well in an internship last summer -- an internship which was one of just two awarded by the CME from an applicant pool of over 1,000.

Bast is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree as well as an NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete and a 2012 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. In addition to her degree pursuit, Bast is enrolled in the Undergraduate Leadership Program (ULP), which led her to create the Wildcats Reach Out and Reinforce Respect (R.O.A.R.R.) Program in conjunction with the athletic department. The anti-bullying initiative has been deployed in close to a dozen schools so far and recently was profiled by ESPN.com.

On the field, the 2012 NFCA All-American concluded her Northwestern career as one of the program's all-time greats. She capped her time in Purple by batting .347 with a team-high 54 RBIs and an incredible .988 fielding percentage with just two errors at third base to earn Big Ten All-Defensive team honors this season. She ranks among NU's all-time leaders with a .342 career batting average, 194 RBIs, 153 runs, 207 hits, 31 doubles, 39 home runs, 361 total bases, a .451 on-base percentage and a .597 slugging percentage.
