No. 2 Seed Northwestern Opens NCAA Regional at Home Friday

Northwestern's NCAA Regional Notes in PDF Format Northwestern NCAA Tournament Central EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the second-consecutive year, Northwestern kicks off the NCAA Tournament on the familiar terrain of its own Sharon J. Drysdale Field. The Wildcats earned the No. 2 overall seed in the 64-team field, and begin the 2007 Tournament at 2:30 p.m. CT Friday, May 18, against Horizon League automatic qualifier Wright State. The other two squads which earned berths in the Evanston Regional are Illinois State out of the Missouri Valley Conference and Notre Dame out of the BIG EAST. Those two teams will square off at noon CT Friday, May 18, in the opening game of the Regional. Every game of the Evanston Regional will be video streamed live at NUsports.com free of charge. In addition to the video stream, a Northwestern softball postseason tradition continues this year with every Wildcats' NCAA Tournament game broadcast live on student-radio WNUR 89.3 FM. Northwestern comes into the tournament with a 45-11 record, ranking it sixth in the nation in winning percentage (.804). The Wildcats are ranked No. 6 in both the NFCA and USA Softball polls. Illinois State joins NU in the rankings this week, coming in at No. 22 in the NFCA poll and No. 25 in the USA Softball version. This season marks the third-straight year Northwestern and Notre Dame will face off in the NCAA Regional first round, with the Wildcats having eliminated the Irish in the Regional championship in each of the last two years. In its nine previous trips to the NCAA Tournament, Northwestern is 8-1 in its opening game. This is the Wildcats' fifth-straight appearance in the 64-team field, the second-longest active streak in the Big Ten. Northwestern's No. 2 seed is the highest in program history, and marks the third-straight year the Wildcats have received a seed. NU was the No. 9 seed in 2005 and the No. 4 seed in last year's event, when it made a run all the way to the championship series of the Women's College World Series, eventually falling to Arizona in the best two-of-three final in Oklahoma City.
