EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior infielder Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) has been named a Capital One Academic All-District V first-team selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
An Academic All-Big Ten, NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honoree in 2012, Bast also earned NFCA All-America honors on the field last season. The 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Award is the first of her career and the 14th in Northwestern softball history.
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better and be in their second academic year at their institution. Bast now is eligible for consideration on the Academic All-America ballot.
Bast, who was one home run shy of the Big Ten Triple Crown in 2012, is having another strong campaign in 2013. She leads the team with 42 RBIs and 42 runs scored through 46 games started and played at third base, batting .323 and occupying the No. 3 spot in a lineup that currently is batting .310 on the year -- one point better than the school record of .309. As a junior, Bast already ranks seventh all-time at NU with 138 RBIs and eighth with 29 home runs.
Bast, a learning and organizational change major in NU's school of education and social policy, and Northwestern close the regular season beginning at 5 p.m. CT today, May 3, in the first game of a three-game set at No. 10 Michigan.
