NU Hosts the Big Ten Tournament May 8-10!
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Weekend 2014 has arrived at Sharon J. Drysdale Field. Northwestern will celebrate an accomplished six-member Senior Class May 2-4 when Michigan State comes to town for a three-game set.
Game one is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT Friday, May 2, with game two starting at 1 p.m. CT Saturday, May 3. Following that contest, NU will hold its eighth annual Purple Auction in Welsh-Ryan Arena. Then, prior to Sunday's noon first pitch on Senior Day, the Wildcats will formally fete their Seniors.
Audio will be available for all three games this weekend, though specific links will not be updated until Friday. WNUR 89.3 FM will broadcast Saturday's game while alternative audio is being explored for the Friday and Sunday contests. At a minimum, we will provide links to the Spartan Sports Network to hear the Michigan State audio of those two games.
Sammy Albanese (Belmont, Calif./Castilleja) threw the 44th no-hitter in Northwestern history as a freshman in 2011 and has had a resurgent senior campaign, earning a complete-game four-hit victory over then-No. 3 Washington and victories in both ends of a doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin.
Emily Allard (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley) ranks 23rd in NCAA Division I history with 144 steals, which also is the NU record. She also ranks second at NU in batting, runs and hits behind only four-time All-American Tammy Williams.
Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) has earned NFCA All-America and Capital One Academic All-America awards during her Northwestern career, which will close with the slugger ranked among NU's all-time leaders in nine offensive categories.
Mari Majam (Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) won an All-Big Ten first-team honor in 2013 and has turned her speed into an ability to score. After leading the B1G in runs scored in league play in 2012, Majam ranks sixth all-time at NU with 137 total in her time in purple.
Amanda Mehrsheikh (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) appeared in 42 games for NU before graduating early and serving as the NU Director of Softball Operations for 2014. She remains a hilarious and indispensable member of the family.
Paige Tonz (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) is the first four-year starting catcher of the Drohan era. In her 186 starts, she has caught 22 shutouts and four no-hitters, and this year is batting over .300
All six of those seniors will be honored all weekend long at festivities that will include, as always, the celebrated PURPLE AUCTION on Saturday, May 3.
