EVANSTON, Ill. -- The battle for position atop the Big Ten standings heading into the re-birth of the conference tournament this year is heating up, and Northwestern's midweek B1G doubleheader at Wisconsin will have much to say in the matter.
The Wildcats and Badgers do battle in a pair of games beginning at 3 p.m. CT Wednesday, April 24, on the Big Ten Digital Network (available via Wildcats All-Access at NUsports.com). Wisconsin enters this series in third place in the Big Ten standings at 10-5, a half game ahead of a fourth-place tie between Northwestern and Minnesota at 9-5. The top four finishers in the league standings receive byes at the reincarnated Big Ten Tournament to be held May 9-12 in Lincoln, Neb.
This series between Northwestern and Wisconsin originally was scheduled for March 27 but had to be shifted after poor spring weather in Madison made Goodman Diamond unplayable .
Northwestern is coming off a sweep at Penn State last weekend after which sophomore Amy Letourneau was named Big Ten Player of the Week for the second time this month. She batted .688 with five doubles, a home run and seven RBIs in four games last week to raise her team-best average to .375 with a .683 slugging percentage. She also picked up all three wins in the circle against the Nittany Lions and had a save in a nonconference contest against Northern Illinois to make her 17-9 on the year.
After the quick daytrip to Madison, the Wildcats return home April 26-28 for Senior Weekend against Purdue. Weather forecasts are beautiful for an action-packed weekend that features the seventh-annual Purple Auction after the game on Saturday. Donate Life Illinois will be in attendance Saturday as well, and a spring version of Wildcat Alley will take place during the series before Senior Day on Sunday.
