EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the second time this season, sophomore Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week for her plate prowess, earning this award with her performance in a three-game road sweep of Penn State.
Letourneau's week continues a red hot B1G season for the sophomore, who is batting .568 and slugging 1.136 with a .667 on-base percentage in Northwestern's last 15 games. She has seven doubles, six home runs and 21 RBIs in that stretch for the 'Cats while also going 9-2 in the circle with one save, a .177 opponent's batting average and 9.68 Ks per seven innings.
In four games last week, Letourneau batted .688 -- a number which also included a nonconference win over Northern Illinois -- and slugged 1.188 while compiling a .722 on-base percentage with seven RBIs on five doubles and a home run. She had multiple hits in all four contests and at least one double in each, as well.
Against the Nittany Lions, Letourneau started out 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in game one before matching her career-best single game hit total during a 4-for-5 outing with two doubles and three RBIs in game two. She concluded the weekend by going 3-for-4 in the finale, with her only out coming when the Nittany Lion center fielder snared a ball just above the grass in the right-center field gap with a headlong dive.
Just as in her last B1G Player of the Week honor earlier this season, the NU staff ace's pitching did not factor into the award though it very well could have. While she threw a no-hitter to augment her hitting stats when she won the award on April 1, this past week she earned all three of NU's wins against Penn State while recording a five-out save against NIU.
In addition to Letourneau's two awards this month, junior Mari Majam (Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) was named Big Ten Player of the Week on April 8 to give the Wildcats three of the four conference accolades this month.
Northwestern returns to action in a 3 p.m. CT doubleheader Wednesday, April 24, at Wisconsin. The contests, which will be broadcast on the Big Ten Digital Network, are rescheduled from March 27 when poor playing conditions in Madison forced postponement of the series.
