Northwestern's Wisconsin Series Game Notes (PDF Format)
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Following a successful 2012 home opener Wednesday at Sharon J. Drysdale Field, Northwestern gets right back on the road this weekend for a B1G Ten series at north-of-the-border rival Wisconsin.
The Wildcats and the Badgers first meet in a noon CT doubleheader Saturday, March 31, at Goodman Diamond in what will serve as Wisconsin's first home action of 2012. The teams then conclude the series live on the Big Ten Network at 2 p.m. CT Sunday, April 1 (no joke).
Northwestern defeated cross-town opponent UIC Wednesday, 7-2, to open its home schedule following 28 games on the road. Freshman Amy Letourneau picked up the win while sophomore Sammy Albanese closed out the game in the circle in addition to clubbing a three-run home run, which was the first homer of her career.
In the first NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) report of the year released this week, Northwestern sits at No. 45 in the country despite an 11-17 record at the time of the data announcement. This speaks to the Wildcats facing one of the nation's toughest--if not THE toughest--schedules so far this year.
Twenty-two of NU's 29 games this year have come against the RPI's top-100, while 17 have come against the RPI top-50. NU has top-50 wins against No. 12 Texas A&M, No. 15 Missouri, No. 29 Texas Tech and No. 32 Massachusetts. Northwestern's three games against Wisconsin (RPI 77) will give it 25 contests against top-100 teams in 32 games after Sunday.
Wisconsin comes into this weekend with a 2-1 Big Ten record after winning its opening series at Iowa. The Badgers are 13-10 overall this season.
After playing in Madison, Northwestern hits the nonconference pavement for a single game Wednesday, April 4, at Notre Dame before hosting Iowa April 7-8.
