EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head coach Kate Drohan announced today (March 27th) that senior Emily Allard (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley) will miss the remainder of the 2013 season while continuing to recover from off-season surgery.
Allard is eligible to seek a medical hardship waiver.
"Emily has worked tremendously hard in her rehab program to get back on the field this year," Drohan said. "Unfortunately her recovery did not progress the way it needed to for her to be able to compete this season."
Allard, a three-time All-Big Ten and NFCA All-Region selection at shortstop, started six games this season in the offensive lineup only as the designated player. She suffered a recovery setback in her second at-bat of NU's first game of 2013, then missed a month before attempting to come back again March 8-10 at the South Florida Under Armour Showcase.
Allard is a career .405 hitter who holds the school single-season batting record with a .491 average in 2011. That year, she also earned the NFCA Golden Shoes Award as the nation's top base stealer. She currently is one steal shy of the Northwestern career record of 118.
Northwestern returns to action in its first home series of the 2013 season when it hosts Minnesota Friday through Sunday, March 29-31. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT while Saturday is a 1 p.m. CT start and Sunday's contest will be broadcast live on BTN at noon CT.
