EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 23 Northwestern opens Big Ten play this weekend when it welcomes Wisconsin for a three-game series Friday and Saturday, March 21-22.
The series has shifted locations to the Ballpark at Rosemont in Rosemont, Ill., to ensure the best playing surface possible. This also has reconfigured the start times to a doubleheader at 9 a.m. CT Friday and a single-game at 4 p.m. CT Saturday. Because of the forecasted temperatures Sunday, that previously announced doubleheader has been moved to 9 a.m. CT Friday.
The Wildcats are coming off a 15-5 preconference schedule that included several wins over top-15 squads to help them climb back into the USA Today/NFCA top-25. After making an initial 2014 appearance at No. 25 last week, NU is up to No. 23 in the current edition. Northwestern was ranked in 76-straight editions from 2005-10.
Wisconsin is the defending Big Ten Tournament champion and is coming off one of the best seasons in its history. The Badgers will be in town early hosting a Thursday, March 20, doubleheader against Detroit at Rosemont.
Northwestern's offense currently is the seventh-best in the nation at 7.15 runs per game while NU is batting .343 overall, good for the eighth-highest average in the country. Senior Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) is 12th in nation with 1.35 RBIs per game.
Live audio will be provided for all three games with WNUR alumni Frank Tormey on the call Friday, and Greg Bobak and Frank Tormey broadcasting Saturday. Tormey was the lead broadcaster for the first NCAA appearance of the Drohan era in 2003 and Bobak saw multiple NU postseason runs before his graduation in 2005. The group has made several encore appearances on the NUsports.com airwaves in subsequent years.
Listen live links can be found in this NUsports.com weekly preview release or, more simply, on the NU softball schedule page. Broadcasts of NU softball on Wildcats All-Access are free of charge.
Northwestern had last weekend off for winter quarter finals after finishing 4-1 at the USF Under Armour Showcase March 7-9 in its last action. Senior Emily Allard (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley) was named the Big Ten Player of the Week after batting .667 with eight runs and five steals at that tournament while Nicole Bond (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) was the B1G Freshman of the Week for her two-hit shutout tossed against Western Michigan in what was just her second-career start.
Senior Mari Majam (Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) also batted over .600 two weeks ago in Florida while sophomore Kristen Wood (Trevor, Wis./Wilmot Union) picked up a pair of wins in the circle -- including the first no-hitter of her career -- to move to 8-2 on the season.
