EVANSTON, Ill. -- Fifth-year senior Emily Allard (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley) and freshman Nicole Bond (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) have combined to earn two of this week's three Big Ten weekly accolades.
Allard was named the Big Ten Player of the Week after batting .667 (12-for-18) in five games at the USF Under Armour Showcase, recording a base knock in all five contests including a trio of three-hit efforts. She raised her average on the season from .316 entering the weekend to .400 upon exit.
Allard swiped five bases in Florida to give her 130 on her career, a number which extends her own Northwestern record and puts her just 11 steals away from No. 25 in NCAA Division I history. She also scored eight runs to give her 149 for her career, tying her with Nicole Pauly (2007-10) for second all-time at NU.
Meanwhile, Bond picked up her first Big Ten Freshman of the Week award for a stellar performance in the circle against Western Michigan. In just her third-career appearance and her second-career start, Bond tossed a two-hit shutout in a 5-0 victory over the Broncos. Bond needed just 77 pitches to complete the contest, striking out six and allowing only a fourth-inning bunt single and a seventh-inning seeing-eye single through the infield.
The pair join sophomore Andrea Filler
(Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) as Big Ten weekly award winners in 2014 after Filler claimed the season's first honor by reaching base in her first 11 plate appearances of the year and batting .778 in four games at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
Northwestern is off this weekend for winter quarter finals before returning to action in conference play March 21-23 when Chicago's Big Ten Team welcomes Wisconsin to town. The Wildcats finished their pre-conference schedule with a 15-5 overall record.
