EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) has been drafted by the defending National Professional Fastpitch (NPF) World Champion Chicago Bandits in the league's Senior Draft held Wednesday, March 7.
Seniors in college do not declare for the NPF Senior Draft, but are eligible to be selected by a franchise. That franchise then holds the rights to the player until she has completed her collegiate eligibility, at which point she is able to sign with the team and compete for an available roster spot.
The Chicago Bandits selected Monka in the fifth round of the draft with the 18th overall pick. She will join former Northwestern teammate Tammy Williams, who won the 2009 NPF Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Awards before leaving to play professionally in Japan in 2010. Williams returned to the Bandits in 2011 and has re-signed for the 2012 season.
Monka is a two-time NFCA All-America first team selection and a 2012 ESPN.com preseason first-team All-American. She is a member of the USA Softball Player of the Year Watch List and a candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
Owner of 45 career home runs and a nearly .800 career slugging percentage, Monka led the nation in respect in 2011 with a 1.53 walks per game rate and a .707 on-base percentage, both of which ranked second in NCAA Division I history. She was featured in Sports Illustrated's
Faces in the Crowd section in the May 30, 2011, issue after a streak in which she reached base safely in 25-consecutive plate appearances.
Monka will be the seventh Wildcat to play in National Professional Fastpitch, joining Carri Leto Martin (N.Y./N.J Juggernaut, 2004-05; Philadelphia Force, 2006; New England Riptide, 2007-08); Garland Cooper (New England Riptide, 2007); Eileen Canney (New England Riptide, 2007-08; Chicago Bandits, 2009-10), Williams (Chicago Bandits, 2009 and 2011-12), Nicole Pauly (Chicago Bandits, 2010; Akron Racers, 2011-12) and Robin Thompson (Chicago Bandits, 2011).
Monka is the sixth Wildcat to be selected during the NPF Senior Draft, joining Leto, Cooper, Canney, Williams and current Northwestern pitching coach Courtnay Foster, who was chosen in 2006 but elected not to play in the league. Pauly and Thompson both earned their way into the league via open tryouts.
The Bandits kick off the 2012 season Saturday, June 2, with a special day designed for fans, including a meet and greet. Opening Day is scheduled for Thursday, June 7 when the Bandits host the USSSA Pride at the Ballpark at Rosemont.
