EVANSTON, Ill. -- Coming off a perfect 5-0 weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in which it had a flair for the dramatic, Northwestern faces an onslaught of West Coast foes at the Easton Invitational March 1-3 at Cal State Fullerton.
NU faces three ranked Pac-12 opponents right off the bat, beginning at 11 a.m. CT/9 a.m. PT against No. 8 California on Friday, March 1. Later that day at 5:45 p.m. CT/3:45 p.m. PT, NU faces No. 24 Oregon State for the second time this year after falling to the Beavers, 7-2, at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic.
On Saturday, March 2, Northwestern plays No. 16 Stanford at 5:45 p.m. CT/3:45 p.m PT before an 8 p.m. CT/6 p.m. PT tilt with Cal Poly. The Wildcats take on Cal State Bakersfield Sunday on getaway day.
NU scored 15 runs in the seventh inning or later last weekend, coming from behind in the seventh three times while breaking ties in the sixth or seventh twice to earn its victories. In fact, the only game in which the Wildcats took a lead into the seventh was in a 3-2 victory over then-No. 4 Tennessee.
The perfect pre-conference tournament was Northwestern's first since it went 5-0 at the 2011 DeMarini Invitational, which is the former name of this weekend's Easton Invite. The Wildcats are making their eighth trip to this Fullerton tournament in program history, bringing with them a 21-11 all-time record in the event including a 14-5 mark over the last four appearances.
Senior Meghan Lamberth enters this weekend playing as well as she ever has after going 2-0 in the circle with an 0.48 ERA while batting .500 with a pair of doubles at the Nutter Classic. Her counterpart in the circle, sophomore Amy Letourneau, went 3-0 at the Nutter with a complete-game win over No. 4 Tennessee and a .162 opponent's batting average.
