EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the seventh time in the last eight seasons, Northwestern will join an ever-growing list of schools at softball's biggest and best nonconference tournament, the Cathedral City Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.

This year's edition, which for NU runs from Feb. 25-27, features a record 34 teams--including 15 members of the current NFCA/USA Today top-25 and eight of the top-10 ranked teams in the nation. The tournament is held at Big League Dreams ballpark.

NU opens the tournament at 2:30 p.m. CT Friday, Feb. 25, against Nevada before taking on Florida State immediately after. Both of those games will be played on "Pawtucket Field." On Saturday, Northwestern faces No. 24 Texas A&M at noon CT prior to a showdown with tourney host Oregon State immediately after. NU then plays No. 2 UCLA at 11 a.m. CT Sunday. The three finals games for the Wildcats all will be played on "Wrigley Field."

Northwestern is 15-9 at the Cathedral City Classic (formerly the Palm Springs Classic) since 2004. At last year's edition, many surviving members of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) were on hand for a reunion--with many of them rooting for the Wildcats. The league, made famous in the movie A League of Their Own, was centered around Chicago and featured many Midwest natives on the rosters.

The Wildcats are excited to get back on the field after having three of their scheduled five games in San Diego rained out last weekend. In one of the games it did play, sophomore Emily Allard broke the school single-game record for hits with a 5-for-5 performance during an 11-4 win over UC Davis. Sophomore Meghan Lamberth earned the win in that game to move to a perfect 4-0 on the season in the circle.

As a team, NU enters this weekend hitting .309 with a .434 on-base percentage. Allard leads the Big Ten with a .560 batting average.

Countdown to the Grand: Northwestern enters this weekend 12 wins away from the 1,000th win in program history. Since its inception in 1976, Northwestern has compiled 988 total victories. While schedules have varied over the years (especially in the early seasons; NU played just seven contests in 1976), Northwestern has averaged 37 wins per season since 2002 when the Drohans took over the program.
