EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior pitcher Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) and junior first-baseman Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) have been named to the Preseason Watch List for the 2006 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award as announced by the Amateur Softball Association.

The list is comprised of 50 student-athletes representing 28 schools. Northwestern is one of 12 schools with multiple nominees on the list, and one of two Big Ten schools to appear.

Foster was a third-team NFCA All-America selection last season, and enters her senior season ranked second in Northwestern history in strikeouts and third in wins. She won the 2005 Big Ten ERA title with a 1.08 mark in league contests.

Cooper took home first-team NFCA All-America honors last year, and was named Big Ten Player of the Year after winning her second Big Ten batting title and leading the conference in slugging and on-base percentage.

Northwestern opens its season Friday-Sunday, Feb. 10-12 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
