EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head coach Kate Drohan has announced the addition of transfer Andrea Filler to the Wildcats softball program. Filler enrolled at NU prior to the fall quarter and is available immediately in 2014.
A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Filler previously played two seasons at Boston College. She earned an All-ACC honor as a freshman before seeing her sophomore year cut short by injury. She was granted a medical hardship waiver, giving her three years of eligibility as a 'Cat.
"After my first visit to Northwestern, I knew this place was special," Filler said. "I chose to come to Northwestern for the community, tradition, beautiful campus and great academics that accompany solid athletic programs. I am beyond thankful and excited to have found a new home and to have the opportunity to be a part of the softball program and the northwestern community.
"Wearing purple is not just wearing a color that looks good; it is an honor to represent this University and everything that it stands for. So many people dream of wearing purple but I am so blessed to actually get to wear the Northwestern Stripe."
Filler, an infielder by trade, batted .300 during her freshman all-conference season with 17 extra-base hits including seven home runs. She was off to a red-hot start last year, batting .382 with a .523 on-base percentage and 10 RBIs through 14 games before her season-ending injury.
"Andrea is a very motivated student-athlete and a great teammate," Drohan said. "Her athleticism and versatility in the infield will play a big part in our team's success this season. We are thrilled she chose Northwestern to continue pursuing her softball career."
Filler was a two-time all-state first-team honoree with Bishop Dwenger High School, leading her squad to the Indiana state title in 2010 when she led the entire state with a .703 batting average and 12 home runs. As a senior, she finished third in Indiana with a .629 mark at the plate. In club ball, Filler won four National Softball Association (NSA) World Series Championships with the Indiana Shockwaves before taking fourth at ASA Nationals in 2009 with Indiana Magic G.
Filler and Northwestern open the 2014 season Feb. 7-9 at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
