EVANSTON, Ill. -- Three Wildcats have been selected to USA Softball's National Collegiate Player of the Year Top 50 watch list for the 2007 season.

Senior Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise), senior Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) and sophomore Tammy Williams (Roscoe, Mo./Osceola) earned spots on the list. The award, which is considered one of the most prestigious honors in women's collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country.

The Wildcat trio all were NFCA All-Americans and Women's College World Series All-Tournament team selections in 2006.

Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Canney had a 26-9 record with a 1.20 ERA and 383 strikeouts, the second-best total in Northwestern single-season history. Her 17 shutouts ranked third on NU's single-season list.

Two-time defending Big Ten Player of the Year Cooper batted .368 last season with a school-record 24 doubles, 10 home runs, 44 RBIs and a .676 slugging percentage. She already holds seven NU career offensive records and ranks sixth in NCAA Division I history with 20 intentional walks.

Big Ten Freshman of the Year Williams led Northwestern with a .377 batting average last season. She set school records with 65 runs scored, 14 home runs and 139 total bases. Williams finished the year ranked seventh in Division I with 1.00 runs scored per game.

This is the second year Northwestern has had representation on the list; Cooper and then-senior Courtnay Foster earned spots last season.

The 2007 preseason watch list is comprised of 50 players representing 33 schools and 11 different NCAA Division I conferences. The ASA will announce the 25 finalists on April 4. A player does not have to appear on the initial watch list to be considered as a Top 25 finalist, but once the Top 25 is named the remaining finalists must be selected from that list.

Just days before the start of postseason play, a list of 10 finalists will be named and released on May 9. The three finalists will be announced May 23 while the winner of the 2006 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced prior to the start of the 2007 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
