EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern softball team defeated Penn State, 3-0, today at Anderson Field. NU wins the series, 2-1, and improves to 24-12 overall, 7-4 in the Big Ten. Penn State drops to 14-21-1, 4-9 in the Big Ten.

The 'Cats got all the offense they needed with single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Jaclyn DeBoard threw a complete game shutout for the 'Cats, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out five. Jenn Shull was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Brooke Siebel scored two runs for NU. Penn State threatened in the sixth, putting runners on the corners with just one out, but NU thwarted a double-steal attempt by picking Shannon Angel off third. DeBoard then induced Terra Pracht into an inning-ending foul popup. She retired the Nittany Lions in order in the seventh to improve her record to 15-2 on the year. The 'Cats return to action this Tue., April 14, when they host the Wisconsin Badgers in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Anderson Field. They play two more at Northeastern Illinois on Thursday before heading to Ann Arbor, Mich., next weekend to take on Big Ten leading Michigan.
