    Softball Wins Second Tournament of the Year

    'Cats take title at Santa Clara Invitational

    EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern softball team claimed their second tournament title in as many weeks as they captured the Santa Clara Invitational last weekend in Santa Clara, Calif. NU, now 12-5 on the year, has won eight of their last nine games.

    The 'Cats opened the tournament with a loss to St. Mary's, 5-3, but rebounded to take the next three games. Jenn Shull powered the offense in the win over Santa Clara, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Kyla Hattabaugh had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI and Jill Nesbitt and Mikeal Chambers each had RBIs. Hattabaugh and Tami Jones each had two hits as NU exacted revenge over Saint Mary's in the semifinals.

    In the championship game, NU was held to just four hits, but pulled out the win. Jaclyn DeBoard went 3-0 on the weekend to run her record to 8-1 on the year. She threw 2.1 innings of relief to pick up the win over Santa Clara and tossed complete game wins over St. Mary's and Oregon. For the weekend, she threw 15.1 innings, giving up just one run and five hits while striking out 11.
