    NU Softball Splits Pair at Santa Clara Tourney

    SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Northwestern University's women's softball team ran their record to 10-5 by splitting two tournament games in the house in Santa Clara, Calif on Saturday. In the opener, the 'Cats were beaten 5-3 by St. Mary's (Ca.) in five innings. NU rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but was unable to overcome the three runs St. Mary's put on the board in the top half of the inning.

    Northwestern rebounded quickly by defeating Santa Clara 4-3 the next time they took the field. Samantha French got the win for the 'Cats, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up three runs on four hits. Jaclyn DeBoard closed out the win with a 2.1 inning, one hit performance. Kyla Hattabaugh, Jenn Shull, Jill Nesbitt, and Mikeal Chambers each drove in one run, with Hattabaugh scoring twice and Shull going three-for-three at the plate. NU scored two runs in their last at bat and then held Santa Clara scoreless in the top of the sixth for the win.

    The 'Cats' third game was washed out by rain. The tournament will continue tomorrow, weather permitting.
