    Softball Opens Big Ten Play with Wins over Purdue

    March 29, 1998 EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern softball team opened the Big Ten season by taking two of three games from Purdue last weekend. NU is now 18-8 overall, 2-1 in the Big Ten.

    NU suffered a heart-breaking, 5-4, loss in game one of the series. The 'Cats led 4-0 before faltering late. Brooke Siebel went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jenn Shull was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

    NU got revenge in game two with a come-from-behind win of their own. Trailing 5-4 going into the bottom of the fifth, NU got three runs and held on for a 7-5 win. Brooke Siebel got the win in relief with two innings of scoreless pitching and Jaclyn DeBoard picked up her second save of the season. Lindsey Prezell knocked in three runs to pace the Wildcat attack.

    Northwestern kept the come-from-behind theme going in game three with a 6-3 win. They trailed 3-0 after the first inning but got five runs in the top of the third to pull out the victory. Kyla Hattabaugh rapped a two-run double and Mikeal Chambers followed shortly with a three-run triple to highlight the inning. Siebel picked up her second win in as many days by throwing 6.2 innings of scoreless relief.

    NU travels to Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday before opening the home season with a double-header against Loyola on Thursday. The 'Cats open the Big Ten home schedule with three games against Indiana next weekend.
