LINCOLN, Neb. -- After falling in extra innings in the first game of a Big Ten doubleheader Friday at No. 25 Nebraska, Northwestern was unable to regain momentum in a 14-1 (5) game two loss.
Northwestern now is 14-12 overall on the season, 0-2 in the Big Ten with its loss. Nine of NU's 12 losses on the year have come to teams ranked in the current week's USA Today/NFCA coaches poll. Nebraska now is 22-6 on the year, 2-0 in the league with its win.
The game started about as inauspiciously as it could have for Northwestern. On five hits and a three-run Wildcats' throwing error, the Cornhuskers plated eight before NU's second at-bats of the game. The runs snapped Northwestern starter Meghan Lamberth's (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) personal scoreless innings streak spanning five appearances at 21.0 innings.
In the top of the second, one-out singles by Andrea DiPrima
(Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and Lamberth followed by a two-out Olivia Duehr
(Antioch, Ill./Antioch) walk loaded the bases for NU before the threat petered out.
The Wildcats found the scoreboard in the top of the third. Junior Mari Majam (Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) led off the frame with a single back through the middle before scampering all the way around to third when the centerfielder misplayed the ball. Classmate Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) then singled into left to plate Majam for her 25th RBI of the season.
Lamberth had a super-fast 1-2-3 inning in the second, but Nebraska pressed on offense again in the third, plating six more runs to make it a 14-1 score. Freshman Kristen Wood (Trevor, Wis./Wilmot Union) entered the inning in relief and struck out the side to end the scoring, then fanned two more in the fourth before that frame concluded with a diving Brianna LeBeau (Worth, Ill./H.L. Richard) grab at second.
Northwestern was unable to cut any further into its deficit after Wood was able to stymie the Nebraska offense.
Lamberth (6-4) took the loss in 2-plus innings of work, allowing 14 runs (11 earned) on 10 hits and two walks with a K. Wood threw 2.0 innings of relief and gave up no runs on one hit and a walk with five strikeouts.
Northwestern and No. 25 Nebraska will attempt to play the third game of their Big Ten season-opening series tomorrow, Saturday, March 23. Forecasts are not favorable, and final decisions and updates will be provided here at NUsports.com and on Twitter via @NU_Sports and @NUSBCats as soon as they are available.
