FULLERTON, Calif. -- All nine Wildcats in the Northwestern starting lineup recorded at least one base hit and sophomore Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) tossed a three-hit shutout Sunday morning in a 5-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield at the Easton Invitational.
Northwestern improves to 10-9 on the season with its victory while Cal State Bakersfield now is 1-11 with its loss.
Letourneau scattered three hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts to improve to 6-5 overall on the season. The shutout was her first since blanking No. 6 seed Texas in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament and is the third of her career. Letourneau has recorded double digit strikeouts six times this season.
NU now has thrown back-to-back shutouts and has not allowed a run in 17-consecutive innings of play.
Letourneau struck out the side to work around a two-out error in the top of the first, the Wildcats jumped on the board courtesy of a two-out solo home run off the bat of Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park). The blast was Bast's fifth of the season and the 23rd of her career, tying her with Kelly Dyer (2007-10) for eighth in NU history.
Bakersfield got its first hit of the game to lead off the top of the third but some nice defense by NU's middle infielders Brianna LeBeau
(Worth, Ill./H.L. Richards) at second and Anna Edwards
(La Canada, Calif./La Canada) at short helped keep the Roadrunner from running too far.
In the bottom of the frame, Kristin Scharkey (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) led off with a high bounding single over third before swiping second base. Mari Majam (Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) then shot a single into center to push Scharkey to third. Though Scharkey was erased at the plate on a Bast grounder, Majam would cross home on a double steal with Bast to make NU's lead 2-0 going into the fourth.
While Letourneau and the Northwestern defense kept Bakersfield off the board, Meghan Lamberth (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) made a bid to add some insurance for the Wildcats in the fifth, but her deep fly to left bounced just off the very top of the fence to stay in the park for a double. With two outs, LeBeau scorched a pitch into left but it sailed directly to the fielder to end the inning.
Letourneau fanned two more batters in the sixth to give her nine strikeouts for the game, then led off the bottom of the inning with a single. Fran Strub (Coralville, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) entered to run for Letourneau and moved to second on Aubrie May's (La Mesa, Calif./Grossmont) second single of the day before Olivia Duehr (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) bombarded the video board in left with a three-run home run to make the score 5-0.
Duehr's blast was her third of the season and her third in as many games at the Easton Invitational. She now has 10 home runs for her career.
Scharkey, Bast, Lamberth and May all had a pair of hits for Northwestern in the game, with Bast's coming on a home run and a double. Duehr had three RBIs for the `Cats.
Northwestern is back in action at its fifth-consecutive weekend tournament March 8-10 at the Under Armour Showcase hosted by South Florida in Clearwater, Fla.
