No. 18 Northwestern Pounds Long Island, 11-0 (5)
Feb. 28, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ga. -- After two days of travel worthy of Odysseus, followed by a full day of rain delays, No. 18 Northwestern finally took the field at the NFCA Leadoff Classic Saturday night, defeating Long Island, 11-0 (5). Northwestern now is 9-6 on the season with the win while Long Island falls to 5-7 with its loss. Junior starter Lauren Delaney (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) allowed the first two Blackbirds she saw in the top of the first to reach base before fanning the next three to end the inning. Northwestern matched the Long Island start by putting both Tammy Williams (Roscoe, Mo./Osceola) and Robin Thompson (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) on base via back-to-back leadoff singles in the bottom of the first. Nicole Pauly (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) moved both runners up with a productive out, then another groundout by Michelle Batts (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) brought Williams home for a 1-0 NU lead. The Wildcats added to their total in the bottom of the second. Kelly Dyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, then moved to second when Kelly Quinn (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) reached on an error. One out later, Williams smacked a double to score both runners. Williams moved to third after the throw to the plate on the preceding play sailed to the backstop, then came home one out later when Pauly singled to left to put the Wildcats on top, 4-0.
After Delaney fanned two more batters in the top of the third to reach seven Ks for the game, Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) led off the third with a single before being replaced by pinch runner Aly Euler (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park River Forest). Blaire Porter also replaced Long Island starter Jenny Giles (2-2) in the circle at that moment.
Erin Dyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) greeted Porter with a single before Kelly Dyer was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to load the bases. After a force out at the plate, pinch hitter Emily Haug (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) did what pinch hitter Emily Haug has been doing all year long. The junior singled into left to drive in the sisters' Dyer, making Haug 5-for-8 on the year in pinch-hit appearances. Jordan Wheeler (Garden Grove, Calif./Los Alamitos) re-entered for Haug at first, then both she and Quinn, who reached on the fielder's choice, moved up a bag on a wild pitch. A groundout from Williams and a single by Thompson scored Quinn and Wheeler to push the game into run-rule territory, 8-0. A Thompson stolen base, an LIU error, a walk to Pauly, several wild pitches and a Batts' single plated two more 'Cats to give NU six runs in the third inning and a 10-0 lead in the game. Delaney whiffed the side in the top of the fourth, reaching 10 strikeouts for the game. Northwestern continued to press the accelerator in the fourth. Pinch hitter Olivia Zolke (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) and Quinn both reached base on one-out walks, with Kelly Dyer re-entering to run for Zolke. A single by Wheeler scored Dyer from second and moved Quinn to third, with Wheeler taking second on the throw to the plate to account for the final 11-0 score. Delaney (8-5) earned two more Ks in the fifth inning to finish her one-hit shutout with 12. Williams had two hits, three RBIs and scored twice, while Thompson also had a pair of hits. Kelly Dyer scored three runs in the game, the same amount she had against LIU last week when the teams met. Quinn scored twice and both Haug and Batts drove in two. Northwestern's first game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic against No. 20 LSU was canceled after the Wildcats had flight difficulties. NU's second Friday game versus No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette was a victim of the heavy rains that wiped out the majority of the weekend's schedule. After 10 schools (including slated opponents Georgia Tech and South Carolina) left town Saturday morning due to the weather, NU added a second Saturday contest against Hofstra. The Wildcats' Sunday game status remains uncertain. Northwestern and Long Island met last week at the Cathedral City Classic, with the Blackbirds coming out on top, 11-6.
