TEMPE, Ariz. -- In the final game of the Kajikawa Classic Sunday morning in Tempe, Ariz., No. 4 Northwestern's offense had trouble getting on base and Cal State Fullerton eked out a pair of runs to defeat the Wildcats, 2-0.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-3 after the season's first tournament of the year. NU fell to No. 1 Arizona, No. 13 Texas A&M and Fullerton, while defeating No. 8 Stanford and No. 21 Fresno State in the event. The win improved Fullerton to 2-3 on the year.
Fullerton scored the game's first run in the top of the third. After a one-out single, the Titans sacrificed the runner to second, then drove her in with a double to left for a 1-0 lead.
A single to right and a hit batter loaded the bases still with two outs, then the Titans hit a flare into foul territory behind the bag at third. Junior Darcy Sengewald (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) turned, sprinted backwards and made a diving, over-the-shoulder catch to end the inning.
Fullerton added to its lead in the top of the fourth, getting a one-out single and a double to put runners on second and third. Northwestern starter Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) then was replaced in the circle by Lauren Delaney (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias). A Northwestern error allowed one run to score, then Delaney earned a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning with the Titan lead at two, 2-0.
Northwestern began a rally in the bottom half of the sixth when sophomore Tammy Williams (Roscoe, Mo./Osceola) drew a leadoff walk. Senior Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) followed with a fly ball to the deepest part of center field, getting under it just enough that it was caught at the fence for the first out of the inning. Williams then stole second, but the inning would end with no NU runs.
Canney (0-3) took the loss, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing two runs -- one earned -- on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Delaney pitched 3.2 innings of hitless relief, allowing just one walk and fanning four.
Candice Baker (1-1) picked up the win for Fullerton, allowing three hits and three walks with nine Ks.
Freshman Nicole Pauly (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had a double for NU, while Jessica Miller (Elberfeld, Ind./Techumseh) and Sengewald had singles for the 'Cats.
Northwestern returns to action Feb. 16-18 at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.
