TEMPE, Ariz. -- Boise State took advantage of five Northwestern errors to defeat the Wildcats, 11-3, Saturday at the Kajikawa Classic.

Freshman Kristen Wood (Trevor, Wis./Wilmot Union) earned her first-collegiate start in the game for the Wildcats and made quick work of the Broncos with a 1-2-3, two strikeout first frame. Her second inning started in the same way before a two-out walk and a bloop double just inside the third-base line gave the Broncos some life, but Mari Majam (Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) tracked down a liner in left to keep Boise State off the board.

Northwestern grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second with its own two-out rally. First, Aubrie May (La Mesa, Calif./Grossmont) reached on an error before Andrea DiPrima (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) drew a walk. Sammy Albanese (Belmont, Calif./Castilleja) then dinked a single into right that brought May in from second and gave NU a 1-0 advantage going to the third inning.

Boise State evened the score in the top of the fourth via a one-out run-scoring double, then took a 2-1 lead on a two-out Northwestern error. The Broncos pushed that edge to 5-1 with a two-run home run followed by a solo home run in the fifth. At that point, Albanese entered the game in relief of Wood, but a trio of NU errors made that edge 8-1 before the end of the frame.

Boise State then pushed the game into run-rule territory, 9-1, with a solo homer to lead off the sixth. In the bottom of the frame, Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) and Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) roped back-to-back one-out singles to left. Fran Strub (Coralville, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) ran for Letourneau, then Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) delivered a run-scoring single to left to stave off the run-rule and make the score 9-2.

Boise State tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Midway through the frame, Meghan Lamberth (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) took the circle in relief of Albanese to get the final out. Lamberth led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to account for the final 11-3 score.

Wood (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. Albanese went 2.1 innings and surrendered six runs (three earned) on seven hits with a strikeout.

Northwestern returns to action at noon CT (11 a.m. MT) against No. 2 Oklahoma on getaway day at the Kajikawa Classic.
