TEMPE, Ariz. -- Oregon State hit a first-inning grand slam and held all of Northwestern's rally attempts at bay in a 7-3 loss for the Wildcats Saturday morning at the Kajikawa Classic.
Northwestern now is 0-3 on the season with its loss while Oregon State improves to 2-2 with its victory.
Oregon State staked itself to an early lead Saturday morning, taking advantage of a trio of one-out walks from Northwestern starter Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) to record a grand slam and take a 4-0 edge.
Northwestern put together a two-out rally in the top of the second on back-to-back solid singles by Aubrie May (La Mesa, Calif./Grossmont) and Andrea DiPrima (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) but the rally was stemmed by a running catch in right field to end the inning.
Oregon State added a run in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-0 game. Northwestern continually put runners on base through the middle innings before finally breaking through in the fifth with a bit of help. Paige Tonz
(Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) led off with a strong single to right before a series of fielder's choice balls and an error put Kristin Scharkey
(Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) on second and Mari Majam
(Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) on first with two outs. Marisa Bast
(Orange, Calif./Villa Park) then put a ball in play to right, but the wind aided the fielder in booting the ball allowing all of NU's runners to score to cut the deficit to three, 5-2.
Northwestern unfortunately returned the favor in the bottom of the frame, committing a two-run error that pushed Oregon State's lead back out to five, 7-2.
In the top of the sixth, Northwestern loaded the bases with no outs when Letourneau smoke a leadoff double down the left field line, May lined a single into right and then DiPrima reached on an error by the shortstop. The big hit still would not come for the Wildcats, who were unable to score after two flyouts to medium-shallow left field and a fielder's choice ground out.
Sammy Albanese (Belmont, Calif./Castilleja) entered the circle in relief to start the bottom of the sixth and had a very quick and relatively simple scoreless frame. In the top of the seventh, Majam led off with a nice bunt that resulted in a two-base error when the throw was launched into left. One out later, Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) blazed a double off the third baseman's glove to bring Majam home and make it a 7-3 score. Fran Strub (Coralville, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) entered to run for Edwards at second. Letourneau then drew a walk, but the game ended with no more NU runs.
Letourneau (0-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on four hits and nine walks with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Albanese went 1.0 inning in relief, fanning one. At the plate, May had a 2-for-4 day while Majam scored twice to lead NU.
Northwestern returns to action at immediately at the Kajikawa Classic with a contest against Boise State.
