EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern goalkeeper Rachel Bergman (West Bloomfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week the conference announced today.

Bergman played all 180 minutes in net over the weekend, helping the Wildcats shut out Northern Illinois 2-0 Friday and Yale by the same 2-0 score on Sunday. The NU freshman stopped two shots in each contest, helping Northwestern stay unbeaten in its last three matches and improve to 4-2-1 on the season.

Friday’s shutout also was the first career win for Bergman, who has been NU’s starting goalkeeper the last four matches.

This is the first Big Ten honor for Bergman and she is the first NU freshman to receive the weekly accolade since current junior Kate Allen’s freshman of the week award on Aug. 23, 2010.

Bergman and the Wildcats kick off Big Ten action this weekend at Lakeside Field as Nebraska makes its first trip to Evanston as a member of the Big Ten Conference. Friday’s match starts at 5 p.m. and will air tape-delayed on the Big Ten Network at 7 p.m. NU then wraps up its weekend on the road, playing its final nonconference match Sunday at Oakland at noon.
