Northwestern vs. Northeastern/Boston University Match Notes
EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern will spend its Labor Day weekend on the East Coast, traveling to Boston to take on two nonconference foes. The weekend begins Friday, at Northeastern and continues Sunday at Boston University.
Here are some notables on the 'Cats as they head into their second week of the 2013 campaign:
A pair of freshmen cracked the starting lineup in NU's season opener vs. Western Illinois. Addie Steiner started at forward and Kourtney Scott started on defense for both games last weekend.
In total, six NU newcomers made their first appearances as Wildcats last weekend. Aside from Steiner and Scott, Maria Grygleski, Rachel Zampa, Kaitlin Moore and Jenna Hascher all played at No. 10 Notre Dame. Hascher subbed in for goalkeeper Rachel Bergman during the second half and made two saves in 20:17.
Sophomore forward Suzanne Malherbe played just two games as a freshman in 2012, but is making key contributions early into the season. She scored the first goal of the season for Northwestern, and her first career tally, Friday against Western Illinois during the first half. Malherbe played just 16 minutes total during the 2012 season and has already surpassed that minute total this year, also logging time at No. 10 Notre Dame. So far this season, Malherbe has come off the bench in both games for a total of 45 minutes.
Senior Julie Sierks scored her second career goal Sunday at No. 10 Notre Dame, striking early in the second half. Coincidentally, her other goal came against the Irish during her freshman campaign in 2010.
This weekend's trip to Boston will be a homecoming for sophomore midfielder Nandi Mehta, who is from Lexington, Mass.
Friday's game will be Northwestern's first in series history against Northeastern. Sunday, the Wildcats meet Boston University for just the second time in program history. The last time these two teams met, Boston University took the 4-3 win in double overtime on Sept. 12, 1999.
In just three seasons, Kate Allen has already etched her name in the NU record books and she looks to climb the charts during her senior season. Allen has 18 career goals, which ties for eighth on NU's career list and her 41 career points ranks 10th. Last year, she tallied a career-high seven goals and 17 points, which rank seventh and ninth, respectively, in single-season history.
Senior forward Kate Allen, junior defender Jackie Alyinovich and sophomore defender/midfielder Margo McGinty were named to the Big Ten Women's Soccer Preseason Players to Watch list. As a team, Northwestern was picked to finish eighth in the league standings.
Seniors Nicole Jewell, Kate Allen and junior Jackie Alyinovich were named captains for the 2013 season.
