Season Preview with Coach Moynihan
EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's soccer program gets the 2013 season started this weekend with a pair of matches. The Wildcats welcome Western Illinois to Lakeside Field on Friday at 6:30 p.m. for the home-opener and then hit the road to face 10th-ranked Notre Dame Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CT.
**Parking Notice for Friday's Home-Opener**
Please note that parking may be limited at Lakeside Field on Friday, due to Northwestern hosting the American Craft Exposition at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion. Due to the event's popularity and current north campus construction, we anticipate that there will be heavy traffic and high demand for parking through Sunday August 25th. Police Officers will be posted in the area, to assist with traffic control and parking.
Anyone requiring additional parking information should contact Parking Services directly at (847) 491-3319.
Below are a few notables as second-year head coach Michael Moynihan leads the Wildcats into the 2013 season.
Meet the 'Cats
The 2013 Northwestern women's soccer roster is made up of seven seniors, 11 juniors, six sophomores and eight freshmen. Moynihan returns 10 starters and 24 letterwinners from a year ago, including senior forward Kate Allen, junior defender Jackie Alyinovich and sophomore midfielder/defender Margo McGinty, who were all recently named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch list.
Count on Kate
Kate Allen has been a key part of the Northwestern women's soccer program the last three years, leading the team in scoring in each season. As a freshman, Allen scored six goals, added another five goals as a sophomore and had a career-best seven scores as a junior last year. In total, Allen's 18 goals ties for eighth in NU history and her 41 career points ranks 10th.
Northwestern faces a competitive schedule in 2013, playing five teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the preseason NSCAA poll. Right off the bat, NU faces 10th-ranked Notre Dame this weekend and then has an always-difficult Big Ten schedule on the horizon. NU opens the conference slate at No. 4 Penn State, an NCAA finalist team last year, and faces Michigan (No. 19), Ohio State (No. 23) and Illinois (RV) who also appear in the NSCAA poll.
