EVANSTON, Ill. -- The 2014 Northwestern women’s soccer season officially opens this weekend when the Wildcats visit Milwaukee, Wis., for the Marquette Invitational. NU begins its 19-match regular-season schedule on Friday, Aug. 22 at 5 p.m. vs. Fairleigh Dickinson and then matches up against the host team, No. 15 Marquette at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Fans can follow both matches via Gametracker (see links above) and Sunday’s tilt vs. the Golden Eagles will be available to watch via web stream.
The Wildcats recently faced another ranked squad, No. 16 Notre Dame, last Saturday in an exhibition match at Lakeside Field. NU fared well in the test match, tying a Fighting Irish team that advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, 2-2. Sophomore Addie Steiner and senior Sami Schrakamp registered a pair of first-half goals in the exhibition.
Now in his third season at Northwestern, head coach Michael Moynihan will utilize a mix of experience and newcomers for the 2014 season with starters from last year returning along with the addition of seven freshmen. Three of the team's top five goal-scorers from a year ago will be back for the Wildcats in 2014.
Three returning Wildcats were recently named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List including senior defender Jackie Alyinovich and junior midfielders Niki Sebo and Margo McGinty. Alyinovich and McGinty were a consistent presence on the field in 2013 and after missing last season with a knee injury, Sebo looks to return to form from the 2012 season where she scored five goals.
Alyinovich and junior Nandi Mehta will serve as captains for the 2014 Northwestern Women’s Soccer team.
After this weekend, Northwestern has a quick turnaround for the 2014 home opener at Lakeside Field, hosting cross-town rival UIC on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats then stay at home the following weekend for a match vs. Miami of Ohio before four-straight road contests to start the month of September.
Season tickets are on sale now for the 2014 women's soccer season and they are available for the low cost of $49. Youth seats can be purchased for just $29 and Northwestern also offers a family plan, which admits two children and three youths at a total cost of $99.
