EVANSTON, Ill. -- Before the 2014 Northwestern women's soccer season officially kicks off on Friday, Aug. 22, the Wildcats will have a preseason test this Saturday, Aug. 16, when Notre Dame visits Lakeside Field. Kick is scheduled for 5 p.m. and admission is FREE for the exhibition match.
Now in his third season at Northwestern, head coach Michael Moynihan will utilize a mix of experience and newcomers for the 2014 season with starters from last year returning along with the addition of seven freshmen. Three of the team's top five goal-scorers from a year ago will be back for the Wildcats in 2014.
Three returning Wildcats were recently named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List including senior defender Jackie Alyinovich and junior midfielders Niki Sebo and Margo McGinty. Alyinovich and McGinty were a consistent presence on the field in 2013 and after missing last season with a knee injury, Sebo looks to return to form from the 2012 season where she scored five goals.
Saturday's match will provide a valuable test for the Wildcats as Notre Dame enters the contest ranked No. 16 in the NSCAA Preseason Poll. The Fighting Irish advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and are under the direction of first-year head coach Theresa Romagnolo.
After Saturday's exhibition, Northwestern begins the 2014 regular-season slate in Milwaukee, Wis., playing two matches at the Marquette Invitational. NU will meet Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, Aug. 22 and then the host team, Marquette, on Sunday, Aug. 24. NU's home-opener at Lakeside Fieldl takes place Wednesday, Aug. 27 vs. UIC.
