IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Jessica Palo (Ames, Iowa/Ames) scored just over a minute into overtime, lifting Northwestern women's soccer to a 2-1 win at Iowa Thursday.

Palo won the ball just beyond the 18-yard box and fired a hard right-footed shot into the far corner of the net to win the game for the 'Cats at the 1:25 mark of the extra session. It is the first game-winning goal of the senior's career and her second tally of the season.

The teams battled steady rain and winds in excess of 20 miles per hour throughout the contest. Northwestern (6-8-2, 3-3-1 Big Ten) was able to claim a 1-0 lead on a Hawkeye own goal in the 34th minute. Briana Westlund (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) put a free kick from 50 yards out into the box where it bounced off a defender and in to the net.

Iowa (8-8-0, 0-6-0) evened the game 39 seconds into the second half on a score by Alyssa Cosnek.

Even in difficult weather conditions, Northwestern goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made a career-high nine saves in the victory. The junior stopped a pair of Iowa shots in the final three minutes of regulation that kept the tie in tact and sent the game to overtime.

Northwestern put eight of its 12 shots on target in the match. Alicia Herczeg (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) continued her run of strong offensive play by putting all three of her shots on frame. Emily Langston (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) put two shots on goal and freshman Kendall Thoreson (Seattle, Wash./King's) added one shot on goal while taking a career-high three shots in the match.

The victory is the fourth consecutive in the series for the 'Cats, who haven't lost to the Hawkeyes since 2001. NU now owns a 9-3-1 advantage in the series history between the schools.

NU plays its final road match of the season on Friday, Oct. 30, as the Wildcats take on Minnesota at 7 p.m. The 'Cats then return home for a pair of games at Lakeside Field, beginning with Wisconsin on Monday, Nov. 2. The 7 p.m. match features free admission and parking.
