EVANSTON, Ill. -
On an emotional day at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex, the Northwestern women's soccer team could be forgiven when Sunday's match with Ohio State ended and they looked like they had nothing more to give.
What they gave over the course of 110 minutes had proven to be, if not enough, certainly worth the point that they earned in the 1-1 draw with the 11th-ranked Buckeyes.
"Obviously we would have liked to get the win today," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh. "But we came out with a point and that is important for us right now."
The point is valuable, as Northwestern (6-6-1, 2-4-1) heads toward three straight road matches to end Big Ten play over the next two weekends.
Prior to the match, the Wildcats coaches and players feted seniors Molly Greene, Aileen Guiney and Kristen Pearce. Guiney paid them in kind with her third goal of the season in the 34th minute, as she bent a corner kick that went through traffic and ended up inside the far post.
That looked like it might stand up, as Northwestern's defense was equal to every challenge the Buckeyes (8-2-3, 2-2-3) threw their way. However, Ohio State continued to press, and the Bucks were rewarded in the 74th minute when Heather Miller fired a 30-yard left-footed shot that NU goalkeeper Whitney Jones could not get to. The ball tucked inside the right corner.
In a match that was a wide-open affair all afternoon, both teams had nice chances to end the match but perhaps none better than Miller, who dialed long-distance again in the final minute of regulation and nearly beat Jones with another well-struck effort. This time, Jones' best friend was the crossbar.
Jones was kept busy all day, making nine saves and getting help from Greene during the overtime on another ball.
Northwestern begins its final push next Friday with No. 17 Purdue in West Lafayette. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
