WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- 11th-ranked Purdue scored its first goal in the ninth minute and never looked back as they topped the Wildcats Sunday, 5-0. Senior goalkeeper Lauren Johnston (Denver, Colo./Denver East) faced 14 shots and made nine saves.
With the loss, Northwestern falls to 5-4-2, 0-2 to start Big Ten season. Purdue improves to 10-1-1, 2-0 in conference. The Wildcats host Ohio State and Penn State in the second weekend of the conference schedule.
Johnston made two saves on Boilermaker shots in the first seven minutes, but Purdue broke through at 08:49 to take a 1-0 lead. The Boilermakers' next goal came on their next shot when Loredana Riverso notched her sixth goal of the season at 11:32.
Purdue made it three goals on three-straight shots when Jessica Okoroafo made the score 3-0 at the 14:07 mark of the first half. Purdue added another tally in the 21st minute, but the Wildcats kept the 11th-ranked Boilermakers off the scoreboard for the rest of the half and went into the break trailing 4-0.
Purdue added their fifth and final goal at 82:09 to win the contest, 5-0. NU played to the final whistle as the Wildcats uncorked three shots in the final five minutes of the game.
NU notched 11 shots for the contest with nine of them coming in the second half. The 'Cats forced six Purdue saves in the second frame. Johnston's nine saves marks the most in her Northwestern career.
Junior Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) paced NU with four shots and three on goal. Amanda Hoffman (North Tustin, Calif./Foothill) took two shots off the bench.
Sophomore Zendzi Neal (Washington, D.C./Washington International) played both games this weekend for her first action of 2007 after an injury and junior Jeanette Lorme (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) returned to the field this weekend after missing the last seven games due to injury.
Northwestern returns home for a pair of Big Ten contests at Lakeside Field. The Wildcats host Ohio State at 4 p.m. Friday before taking on Penn State at noon Sunday.
