WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After 83 scoreless minutes of play, Purdue's Jessica Warren scored on a rebound late in the second half, lifting the Boilermakers past Northwestern, 1-0, Sunday afternoon.
The score was set up by Katie Leinert, who sent a high shot off the crossbar that ricocheted towards the far post. A Purdue header attempt from there was punched away from the line by Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson), but the rebound found its way to Warren, who shot from the edge of the six-yard box for the game's lone tally.
"We simply did not show up today," said head coach Stephanie Foster. "Purdue outworked us the entire game. We will prepare all week to put out a great effort and fight against Michigan next weekend."
Northwestern had a pair of scoring opportunities early in the second half, first when Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) bent a shot just wide of the net in the 52nd minute from 20 yards out. The freshman took two shots in the match for Northwestern, which was outshot 11-8 on the day.
Jill Dunn (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) put a shot on goal in the 60th minute - also from outside the box - but Purdue goalkeeper Carianne Betts was able to snag the attempt.
The Wildcats' best scoring chance of the game came in the 41st minute. Emily Langston (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) played a long through ball up the near side to a wide open Bo Podkopacz (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata). But just as the freshman went to fire she was knocked off the ball by a Purdue defender, sending her shot wide of the net and the teams into intermission locked in a scoreless tie.
Northwestern returns home next weekend to open a three-match home stand against Michigan Saturday at 7 p.m. Admission and parking are free for Northwestern women's soccer at Lakeside Field.
