EVANSTON, Ill. -
Freshman Katie Wright scored a pair of goals to lead the Northwestern women's soccer team past DePaul, 2-1, in a battle for city rights Sunday at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex.
Wright's goals -- her second and third of the season -- came just 1:03 apart late in the first half, propelling the Wildcats to their third straight win. Wright has scored all of her eight points in those three wins, and has seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) in the last two matches.
DePaul, which came to Evanston riding a four-match win streak, fell to 4-2-0.
Substituting for junior Ashleigh Garmon -- who nearly scored her third of the season but was thwarted on a breakaway by DePaul goalkeeper Lindsey Deason -- Wright put the Wildcats on the board in the 33rd minute when she rammed home a cross from Nell Compernolle along the left side.
Just 1:03 later, Wright fought off a defender and caught Deason off her line, floating a shot that Deason got a hand on but could not parry over the crossbar.
DePaul came after NU a bit in the second half, and cut the lead to a goal when Kelly DeBaene finished off an effort from Erin Walter in the 82nd minute. However, that was all the Blue Demons would get.
Whitney Jones tallied five saves on the day in collecting the win, while Deason finished with three stops.
Northwestern is home for a pair of matches next weekend, kicking off Big Ten play in the process. The Wildcats host Michigan Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., then takes on Michigan Sunday at 1 p.m.
