NORMAL, Ill. -- Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) scored her third goal in as many games, but Northwestern surrendered a goal in double overtime and fell, 2-1, at Illinois State Sunday.
Allen scored in the 26th minute off an assist from freshman Sami Schrakamp (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista). It was the second time the duo has connected on a Northwestern goal this season, and the second point of Schrakamp's collegiate career. The freshman also had two of the Wildcats' seven shots on goal in the contest.
Anna Cassell (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) made a career-best 13 saves in the match. Illinois State scored on a penalty kick by Jessica Carlson that tied the game in the 51st minute, but the Northwestern keeper stood tough against a flurry of Redbird shot attempts in the closing minutes to send the game into extra time. Rachel Tejada ended the match with a game-winning goal in the 104th minute.
Cassell's 13 saves is the most in a game by a Northwestern goalkeeper since Erin Ekeberg stopped 15 shots against Michigan in 2000. It stands as the eighth highest single-game save total in Northwestern history.
Northwestern returns home to Lakeside Field to host Loyola (Chicago) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14. Admission and parking are free for Northwestern women's soccer matches at Lakeside Field.
