MALIBU, Calif. -- Northwestern trailed by two goals after the first half against Pepperdine Sunday afternoon in Malibu, but second-half goals by Emily Langston and Jenny Dunn tied the score and forced overtime. Senior Laura Janowitsch's (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) goal in the 94th minute gave the Wildcats a 3-2 victory.
The win improves Northwestern to 3-2-0 and Carolyn Edwards picked up the win between the pipes.
Pepperdine got on top of the Wildcats early with two first-half goals. NU had opportunities as Dunn forced three saves by the Waves' keeper in the first 25 minutes. The was all the offense NU could muster in the first frame and Pepperdine line 2-0 at the break with its goals coming at 11:29 and 36:14.
NU got on the board in the 56th minute when Langston put home her second goal of the season at 55:38. A free kick floated to six yards and was tapped in after a deflection. Dunn and Sam Greene picked up the assists.
The Wildcats kept the offensive pressure on as Greene fired a shot wide in the 64th minute and the 'Cats tied the game at 65:30 on Dunn's second goal of the year.
The senior and active leader in career goals scored on a diagonal blast off a throw in. Greene picked up her second assist of the game.
Neither team could find much offense after the 'Cats tied the score as Amanda Hoffman's header attempt that forced a save was the last shot on goal in the second half and the game went to the first of two 10-minute overtimes.
After the Waves fired three shots early in the overtime, it was Northwestern that put home the game-winner at 93:59. Janowitsch's game-winner was her second-career goal and second for the senior defender of the season. She is second on the team in points with five.
Dunn led NU with four shots on goal along with her goal and assist. Edwards made six saves to pick up the win.
The Wildcats return to action at 6 p.m. Friday at Loyola (Chicago).
