Sampson's OT Winner Lifts 'Cats Past Loyola Chicago, 1-0
Sept. 4, 2009
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Kay Sampson's second goal of the season lifted Northwestern to its first win, a 1-0 overtime victory over Loyola Chicago Friday night at Lakeside Field.
Sampson (San Francisco, Calif./Drew School) scored at the 5:34 mark of overtime. Emily Langston (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) made a long run down the far sideline before crossing to Sam Greene (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) inside the six-yard box. Greene picked up her second assist on a pass out to Sampson who fired a rocket into the net from the top of the penalty box.
The goal was the second game-winner of the senior's career, and gave the 'Cats their first overtime win since an Oct. 24, 2008 victory at Iowa.
Sampson took four of the eight shots registered in the match by Northwestern (1-3-1). Kendall Thoreson (Seattle, Wash./King's) also had a strong bid for a goal in the second half off a cross from Langston, but the freshman just missed the net to the left.
"This week we focused on getting back to soccer basics," said Northwestern Head Coach Stephanie Erickson. "The effort we put in paid off tonight. We put in a strong team effort and it helped us earn the result."
Northwestern goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made the game's lone save late in the second half. Edwards stopped a shot by Loyola's Jackie Vera with 8:58 remaining and earned her second clean sheet of the year.
The 'Cats are back in action Friday, Sept. 11 at Penn. NU returns to Lakeside Field on Thu., Sept. 17, for a 6 p.m. match with BYU.
