EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern opened up the 2013 season Friday night at Lakeside Field and it came down to a double-overtime thriller that went in favor of Western Illinois, 2-1. Sophomore Suzanne Malherbe scored her first career goal and first of the season for the Wildcats in the 29th minute.
Head coach Michael Moynihan used a mix of veterans and underclassmen in his first starting lineup of the season with freshmen Kourtney Scott and Addie Steiner making starts in their games as Wildcats. Four sophomores, two juniors and three seniors also started Friday's contest.
Northwestern came out aggressive and maintained possession for a majority of the first half, firing off 11 shots compared to just three for Western Illinois. Malherbe put the ball in the back of the net for the first time in her career to give Northwestern its first goal of the season and the 1-0 lead in the 29th minute. Sophomore Natalie Cikos sent the ball into the box to junior Sami Schrakamp. The ball then bounced off Schrakamp's foot and in front of Malherbe, who was in front of the goal about eight yards out. Malherbe slipped a shot past WIU keeper Laura Atkinson on her left side into the net for the score.
Shortly after, sophomore keeper Rachel Bergman made two back-to-back saves to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the 'Cats. She stopped Tiara Herron's shot but it hit the crossbar after her save and bounced back out for another WIU opportunity that Bergman also saved. NU had three more looks to end the half but took the 1-0 lead into the locker room.
NU nearly took the 2-0 lead early in the second half as Scott had a free kick opportunity that she passed to junior Katie Landgrebe, who sent the ball into the net but an offside call negated the goal. The Wildcats continued to have looks at the net with nine shots in the second half while WIU had three and the Leathernecks also were whistled for three yellow cards in the frame.
With time winding down in regulation the Leathernecks got on the board in the 88th minute with Jordan Walgren's goal.
Neither team scored in the first over time as NU had two shots compared to one for WIU. The Leathernecks then scored the golden goal in the second overtime as Kristin Becker's corner kick sailed into the net, ending the match in the 101st minute.
Northwestern continues the opening weekend of the 2013 season Sunday, visiting 10th-ranked Notre Dame. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m. CT at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
