Northwestern Holds Top Spot in Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Poll
Dec. 29, 2011
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Lacrosse Magazine, the flagship publication of US Lacrosse, announced Thursday its preseason Division I women's lacrosse poll and preseason honorees. Northwestern figured prominently in both, with the Wildcats claiming the No. 1 spot in the rankings and senior Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) being tabbed the preseason player of the year. Northwestern enters the season as the defending NCAA champion after bringing home its sixth national championship in seven years last May. Head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller, who last year was named the IWLCA National Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her career, returns all but two starters to a squad that was 21-2 overall, extended its streak of American Lacrosse Conference titles and saw four players earn All-American honors. Behind Northwestern in the Lacrosse Magazine rankings are the three schools that joined the Wildcats in the 2011 national semifinals -- Maryland, North Carolina and Duke -- with ALC rival Florida rounding out the top five. Smith is the returning Tewaaraton Trophy and Honda Sports Award winner, coming off a year in which she set a new Northwestern standard for single-season goals with 86. The Long Island native was at her best when it mattered most, scoring two game-winning goals on championship weekend and finishing with at least four goals in all six of NU's postseason contests. On the men's side, Lacrosse Magazine selected Cornell's Rob Pannell, a 2011 Tewaaraton Award finalist, as the Division I preseason player of the year in his sport.

Northwestern opens the 2012 campaign at Stanford on Feb. 10 and plays its first home game of the season on Saturday, March 3, vs. Oregon.
