EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern takes its first steps in the journey toward defending its seventh NCAA championship in eight years when it reconvenes for its 2012 fall season in the upcoming weeks. Five-time IWLCA National Coach of the Year Kelly Amonte Hiller announced today (Wednesday) the fall competition schedule for her Wildcats, which includes three chances to catch the defending champs at Lakeside Field.

All three NU home dates at Lakeside Field this fall (Sept. 30, Oct. 17 and Oct. 26) are free and open to the public.

Northwestern will get its first taste of competition this fall against fellow American Lacrosse Conference member Ohio State, squaring off against the Buckeyes Saturday, Sept. 29, in Indianapolis.

The following day, NU returns to Evanston to host regional rival Notre Dame at 1 p.m. (Sunday, Sept. 30) as the 2012-13 compete for the first time on their home field, where they own a record of 90-2 since the 2004 season.

The Wildcats travel east the following weekend to face Loyola (Md.) on Saturday, Oct. 6 before participating in the Play For Parkinsons women's lacrosse series in Alexandria, Va., on Oct. 7. Northwestern will play three challenging opponents that day, squaring off with Penn State (9 a.m. ET), Duke (10:20 a.m. ET) and Maryland (1 p.m. ET). Florida and Towson round out the field at the all-day event.

Marquette, a newcomer to Division I women's lacrosse in 2013, will visit Lakeside Field to take on the Wildcats on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 17 (7 p.m.). Northwestern then wraps up its fall schedule with its annual Alumni Game on Homecoming Weekend, with the action between a wealth of current and former NCAA champions scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26.

Northwestern returns seven starters from its 2012 national championship squad, including defending Honda Sports Award winner and ALC Player of the Year Taylor Thornton as well as All-American Erin Fitzgerald.
