Aug. 14, 2007
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Former lacrosse standout Kristen Kjellman, who led the Wildcats to an unprecedented third-straight national title in May, has been named one of eight finalists for the 2007 Sportswoman of the Year Award by the Women's Sports Foundation. The winners will be announced Oct. 15 in New York City. The Sportswoman of the Year Award is presented to two athletes, one in an individual sport and one in a team sport, whose performances during the past 12 months (Aug. 1, 2006 through July 31, 2007) have been exceptional. Criteria include championships won, records set and awards received. Award winners will be announced on Monday, October 15, 2007, and honored at the Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. Kjellman won her second-straight Tewaaraton Trophy this past season and third-straight Honda Sports Award. She is the only four-year All-America choice (three-time first-team selection) in the school's history and was a three-time ALC Player of the Year. She owns the all-time NU record for goals (250) and points (349) -- both good for sixth on the NCAA all-time annals -- and is second on the school's list with 99 career assists. She set the all-time NCAA record with 39 career goals in NCAA Championship play and holds the NCAA all-time record with 268 career draw controls and a 3.29 draw controls per game average. Kjellman led the Wildcats to a remarkable 77-5 record during her four years (13-1 in NCAA Championship play) and a 62-2 mark over the last three. She started all but one game in her career and also is a current member of the U.S. National Elite Team. Past winners of this award include Sue Bird, Bonnie Blair, Natalie Coughlin, Chris Evert, Mia Hamm, Sarah Hughes, Juli Inkster, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michelle Kwan, Lisa Leslie, Cat Osterman, Erin Popovich, Misty May-Treanor, Martina Navratilova, Annika Sorenstam, Sheryl Swoopes, Melanie Troxel, Kerri Walsh and Serena and Venus Williams.
