EVANSTON, Ill. -- Former Northwestern All-American and assistant coach Lindsey Munday has been selected as captain of the United States Women's Lacrosse National Team, the coaching staff announced Thursday. Munday will have her first opportunity to represent her team as captain at this weekend's North American Challenge Cup in Ontario.
"It's a huge honor. I'm so fortunate to be a part of this team," Munday told Lacrosse Magazine's Clare Lochary. "I think everyone feels that. We're all so lucky to represent our country and it's crazy surprising that I was voted [captain]."
In addition to her role as a leader for Team USA, Munday also is the current head coach at the University of Southern California, which is set to play its first varsity season next spring. While at Northwestern, Munday was a part of two NCAA championship teams as a player and three during her four-year stint as an assistant coach. She remains Northwestern's all-time leader in assists with 128.
Munday was a key component of the Team USA squad that won the 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in the Czech Republic, receiving All-World Team honors after setting U.S. World Cup records with 21 assists and 37 points in the tournament. She first suited up for the national team in 2006 following her graduation from NU.
Munday is one of four Northwestern alums representing the U.S. at this weekend's North American Challenge Cup, part of Team USA's preparations for the 2013 World Cup. Sarah Albrecht (2006), Katrina Dowd (2010) and current NU assistant coach Danielle Spencer (2010) also will be with the squad this weekend when the Americans face Canada and the Haudenosaunee in Ontario. Both Munday and Spencer, however, will be forced to watch from the sideline due to injuries.
