2013 FIL World Cup Schedule | US Lacrosse Coverage
OSHAWA, Ont. -- Four former Northwestern lacrosse stars will spend the next two weeks competing for the ultimate prize at the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario. The FIL World Cup is held once every four years and brings together teams representing 19 nations from around the globe.
Sarah Albrecht ('06), Lindsey Munday ('06) and Katrina Dowd ('10) are donning the red, white and blue in an effort to help Team USA defend its 2009 world title. The Americans are six-time champions of the FIL World Cup.
Munday -- a current captain of Team USA -- and Albrecht each are making their second appearances on the world stage while Dowd is making her first trip to the event. All three are members of Kelly Amonte Hiller's extensive coaching tree, with Munday and Albrecht as the head coaches at USC and New Hampshire, respectively, and Dowd coming off an NCAA championship season as an assistant at North Carolina.
2009 Northwestern graduate and two-time Tewaaraton Award winner Hannah Nielsen
will once again suit up for her native Australia, the team the U.S. defeated by a narrow 8-7 margin in the championship game of the 2009 World Cup.
Former Northwestern assistant and current Ohio State head coach Alexis Venechanos also will be participating in the World Cup as the leader on the sidelines for Team Canada.
The United States and Australia -- both in Pool A along with Canada, England and Wales -- begin play Thursday (July 11), with the Americans facing England (7 p.m. CT) and the Aussies meeting Wales. Additional Team USA games in pool play are as follows:
Saturday, July 13 vs. Wales (3:30 p.m. CT)
Sunday, July 14 vs. Australia (3 p.m. CT)
Tuesday, July 16 vs. Canada (7 p.m. CT)
