EVANSTON, Ill. -- On the first official day of Rutgers' and Maryland's membership in the Big Ten Conference, the league office on Tuesday morning announced the schedule of matchups for the inaugural Big Ten Women's Lacrosse season in the upcoming spring of 2015.
Specific game dates are still to be determined pending television selections from the Big Ten Network.
Lacrosse fans will not need to wait long for the first of many future conference meetings between perennial titans Northwestern and Maryland, winners of 19 total NCAA championships and nine of the last 10. The Terps will visit Lakeside Field in Evanston in Week 1 of the Big Ten season between the dates of March 26-29, the first regular-season meeting between NU and Maryland since a 12-7 Wildcats victory on April 16, 2007, at Lakeside Field.
Head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller owns a 4-2 record against her alma mater since beginning her coaching tenure at Northwestern, with the teams splitting four all-time meetings in the NCAA semifinals or championship game.
The following week, Northwestern will make its second trip in two years to Ann Arbor to face the young Michigan Wolverines, who recently completed their first season as a varsity program.
Between April 9-12, Northwestern's third conference game will bring the Wildcats to Piscataway, N.J., for the first time since 2008, facing a Rutgers program against which NU is 7-0 in its history. The 'Cats won lopsided affairs in the 2008 and 2009 regular seasons by a combined score of 45-8.
The Wildcats will then close its Big Ten regular season slate against familiar foes and former American Lacrosse Conference brethren with home dates against Penn State (April 16-19) and Ohio State (April 23-26).
In May, Northwestern will head back to Piscataway to compete for the first-ever Big Ten Women's Lacrosse Tournament title on the campus of Rutgers University.
