EVANSTON, Ill. -- All members of the Northwestern and Evanston communities are invited to the Norris East Lawn at noon on Monday, June 4, to join in the celebration of the 2012 Northwestern women's lacrosse team capturing its seventh NCAA championship in eight years!
Four-time national coach of the year Kelly Amonte Hiller and the Wildcats will be on hand at Norris to share with their fans the excitement of another championship season, which culminated with an 8-6 victory over Syracuse in last week's title game in Stony Brook, N.Y. The Wildcats finished this season with an 11-1 mark on their home turf at Lakeside Field and on Monday would like to thank their fans for their support throughout the year and for providing the best home-field advantage in NCAA women's lacrosse.
Fans will hear from Amonte Hiller and several members of the team as well as have the opportunity to take photos with NU players and all seven NCAA championship trophies won by the Wildcats since 2005.
A free lunch of hot dogs, chips, cookies and soda will be provided to the first 100 attendees at the Norris East Lawn, located at 1999 Campus Drive in Evanston accessible via the south entrance to campus off Sheridan Road. In the event of inclement weather, the celebration will take place on the Ground Floor level of the Norris University Center.
Led by player-of-the-year finalist Taylor Thornton and IWLCA All-Americans Shannon Smith, Alex Frank and Erin Fitzgerald, Northwestern posted a 21-2 record with 11 victories against teams ranked in the top 10 nationally. Smith took home NCAA Championship MVP honors while Thornton, Frank, midfielder Alyssa Leonard and goalkeeper Brianne LoManto were named to the All-Tournament team for their roles in helping the 'Cats defeat Notre Dame, Duke, Maryland and Syracuse en route to winning the 2012 national championship.
