WASHINGTON -- The Tewaaraton Award Foundation Thursday night named Northwestern's Kristen Kjellman (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) as the 2006 Tewaaraton Award winner as the nation's top female lacrosse player. The junior midfielder received the award tonight at National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C.

She becomes the first player, male or female, from a school outside the Eastern Time Zone to win the award.

Kjellman, recently named a two-time first team IWLCA All-American and also a finalist for the NCAA Honda Award, led the nation's top scoring offense with 72 goals, ranking among the top 10 nationally in goals, points (98) and draw controls (91) to go with 26 assists. She led her team to its second-straight NCAA championship last Sunday as the Wildcats became the first team in Northwestern history to claim back-to-back NCAA team titles.

This season Kjellman became the first Wildcat player to claim three straight IWLCA All-America honors and also became just the second player in NU history to record 50 or more goals three straight seasons-in only her junior season. She had 17 games this year with a hat trick or better, including a season-high six goals at Penn back on March 7.
